crafted: a community

in October, i went to the annual studio sale of ceramicist Ayumi Horie, whose work i have adored for years. i had no idea she lived anywhere near me, but as it happens, by local standards we are practically neighbors. when she told me she was planning a holiday gift sale in the gorgeous old church that is part of her studio, i jumped at the invitation, because i had been hoping to find just such an event after deciding not to apply for the Craftacular this year (which, incidentally, Ayumi will be selling at). so here we are. CRAFTED, featuring 11 local artisans, takes place this very weekend in Cottekill, New York (a hamlet nestled between Stone Ridge, High Falls and Rosendale).

this intimate sale will have a bit  of everything: vegan chocolates by Bluestocking Bonbons, paper cuts by Jenny Lee Fowler, seeds from the Hudson Valley Seed Library (have you SEEN the 2011 seed packs yet?), and lots more. you’ll find gifts for all ages and eccentricities. we will also be doing demonstrations of our arts, roasting chestnuts and drinking hot apple cider, and inspecting the coolest woodpiles you’ve ever seen. Details and directions can all be found here.

what’s most important about all of this to me is that exactly one year after moving into my little farmhouse, i am settling into a new community of hand-makers, and becoming less and less dependent on the city for making a living. and that’s a big part of what i meant yesterday when i said that my dreams are coming true…

i hope to see you this weekend if you’re within range, and if not, please try to seek out some local artisans where you live and show them your support this holiday season!
