two weekends ago i was in hudson again and colleen and i went blueberry picking. i cannot emphasize enough what a glorious activity it was, and how everyone MUST go blueberry-picking toute suite! first of all, they are so EASY to pick, they are practically LEAPING into the bucket that is so conveniently tied around your waist. and there are so many on every bush; that’s why it’s so hard to stop and i had to literally PULL colleen away from the bushes because her lunch guests were already waiting at her house… second, the FLAVOR of these berries is just… words cannot describe. you have not tasted a blueberry until you have picked it with your own hands and eaten them by the handful, warm from the sun. we went to greig farm in Red Hook, but find your nearest patch and get yourself there in any manner possible! i’m telling you, if you are feeling out of sync with the universe, this will bring you to such a good place… all of my doubts and fears about the environment, the planet, people having no understanding or appreciation of where food comes from, were at least momentarily hushed, as i experienced my own little Slow Food Movement. we picked 12 pounds (!) though i have to say it was definitely colleen who picked at least 2/3 of them… then we ate them for the next 2 days, and i brought home about a pound, and colleen froze a few, and made cobbler, and set some aside for a pie next weekend, and gave some to neighbors, and took some home too…
we also harvested colleen’s first cherry tomatoes (from the bed i helped her create last fall using the lasagna gardening method) and had them for lunch in a salad. gertie was not impressed…
