boshi shibori reveal

at the end of the life-altering shibori workshop i took in august with the phenomenal Joan Morris, many of the samples i made in class were still wet when i brought them home. if you want the cloth to retain the texture created by the shibori techniques, in addition to the color, they need to be “bone dry” before you release the stitches. i laid mine out to dry in my cluttered studio, and then of course moved on to other projects. so it was a few weeks later that i remembered i still hadn’t cut them open, and i wanted to photograph the steps so you could share in the excitement. this one is Boshi, or “capped” shibori. by wrapping the stitched shape tightly over a plastic-wrapped cork, then wrapping the outside too, the center of the shape remains undyed. the yellow was dyed with weld, then i overdyed with indigo for the ground. i have a few more of these to share with you over the next few weeks…
