this is one of my most popular classes! i’m teaching it in March at Beetle & Fred in Beacon, NY, and squeezing in one small session (i can only fit 3-4 people max) at my studio in Kerhonkson, NY this month. it can’t really be done virtually, because there’s a lot of one-on-one consulting that takes place, so grab a spot while you can! i only teach it a few times each year.

Clone It! / Make a Pattern from Your Favorite Clothes
Saturday, January 27 from 11am-5:30pm, $150
SOLD OUT!!! but email me if interested and i may schedule a 2nd session
One 6-hour class (plus a half-hour lunch break)
Who doesn’t have a beloved T-shirt, skirt or dress they’ve worn to shreds and wish they had 10 more of? Most of our favorite clothes are actually super simple and easily replicated. You’ll learn how to “rub off” a pattern from an existing garment (and contrary to popular belief, you WON’T have to take it apart). Then we’ll stitch up a quick muslin (fit sample) to test the pattern and tweak it if necessary. You’ll always have a fresh crop of handmade garments that feel like old friends!
Note: The muslin will not be a finished garment, but can likely be finished after class and used as a “wearable muslin”.
Please bring 2-3 options for your project: simple T-shirts/blouses/skirts/dresses (no pants!) with minimal or no gathers or pleats work best. Students must have basic machine sewing experience and have a few simple projects under their belt.
Supplies:
Sewing machine + extension cord
Pad or roll of paper, at least 14″ wide (can be newsprint, drawing paper, etc)
Pencil/eraser/sharpener
Scissors (for paper)
Ruler (ideally 2″x18″ clear plastic sewing ruler)
Tape Measure
Clear/Masking/Painter’s/Washi tape
Push pins or T-pins (you only need a few; don’t worry if you don’t have any)
2-3 yards (depending on item you bring) fabric similar to original garment — must be knit for a knit garment or woven for a woven one!
All-purpose thread to match
Basic sewing kit: Scissors, ruler, tape measure, pins + pincushion, seam ripper, chalk (or other marking tool)
