i always mean to post these on the first of the month, but inevitably it’s a good two weeks in before i actually get around to it! so don’t forget, you can always check in with my classes page if you’re wondering what’s coming up…
here’s the roundup for next weekend, the 25-27. it’s gonna be a busy one! i’ve got three private lessons scheduled in addition to the four classes… wow.
Hem Workshop @ Home Ec in Park Slope/Gowanus, Brooklyn
Friday, February 25 from 6:30-8:30pm
If you hem and haw (*cough!*) over how to finish the openings in your garments (necklines, cuffs, and bottom edges), this is the class for you. In this 2-hour class you will learn several different kinds of hems and edge finishes: top-stitched hem, blind hem (by machine), bias tape facing hem, eased hem (for curved edges), and seam tape hem. Once you know your options, finishing those edges is a breeze!
Embroidery and Applique Workshop @ Lena Corwin’s Studio in Fort Greene, Brooklyn
Saturday, February 26 from 11am-4pm (lunch included)*
Cal will teach all of her favorite embroidery stitches and applique techniques, which can be used to update, embellish and customize clothing, home items, and gifts. The class will begin by stitching a sampler of 12 classic embroidery stitches, then we will explore some applique techniques, and finally begin a project using your own fabric, or a finished item (tea towel, tote bag, clothing).
*i think this one is full, but you can check with Lena.
my 2 Sunday classes would make a perfect set! hang out with me all day: first learn to draft a skirt pattern in the morning, then sew it up (using your own pattern) in the afternoon! we’ll grab some lunch en route from Brooklyn to SOHO in between the two… how about it?
Patternmaking Workshop: A-Line Skirt @ Brooklyn General Store in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn
Sunday, February 27 from 10am-12pm
Design and make your own clothes! In this 2-hour class you will learn the basic principles of making your own sewing patterns, and learn how to take your measurements and make a pattern for a classic, flattering A-Line Skirt that fits your own unique body. With this foundation you’ll be able to sew the projects you envision! Basic sewing experience is helpful to get the most from this class.
One-Day Sewing: A-Line Skirt @ Purl Soho
Sunday, February 27 from 2-6pm
Make a skirt in one day! In this 4-hour class, Cal will show you how to cut from a pattern and sew a classic, flattering A-line skirt. You will learn how to sew darts, seams and seam finishes, hems, invisible zippers and bias-tape facings, all of the elements you need to begin making your own clothes. The pattern will be provided. Students should be at least “advanced beginner” level, and must have a basic knowledge of how to use the sewing machine before taking this class.
