Make Your Own Leggings
one 6-hour session, $120
Sunday, November 12 from 11am-5pm
held at Rosenspace, behind the Big Cheese in Rosendale, NY
People are often surprised to learn they can make their own leggings, but guess what? YOU CAN! And you don’t even need a serger to sew with knits. Cal will show you how to draft a pattern for this wardrobe essential, based on your own measurements. Then we’ll stitch up a first draft fit sample, adjust our patterns if necessary, and proceed to make a pair of real-live leggings. You’ll never buy them off the rack again! Please have at least advanced-beginner sewing skills, with a few simple projects under your belt.
Supplies:
For the pattern:
Pad or roll of paper, at least 18″ wide (can be newsprint, drawing paper, etc)
Pencil/eraser/sharpener
Scissors (for paper)
Ruler (ideally 2″x18″ clear plastic sewing ruler)
Tape Measure
Clear tape
Notebook
For the leggings:
Sewing machine + extension cord
1 1/4 yds* of cotton/lycra jersey for fit sample (most likely will become a “wearable muslin”)
1 1/4 yds* of cotton/lycra jersey for finished leggings
Thread to match
1 yard 1/2″ elastic (or enough to go around your waist)
Basic sewing kit: Scissors (for cutting fabric), pins + pincushion, seam ripper, chalk
*note: most stretch jersey is 58/60″ wide, and will be wide enough to cut both legs out of one length. but if your thigh circumference is more than 30″, you’ll need twice the length (2 1/2 yards).
one last thing: if you’re not local, or this doesn’t fit your schedule, you can always take my online workshops Drafting Leggings Pattern and Sewing Leggings over on Creativebug!
