stitches at home

have you taken a virtual class yet? before 2020 i had neither taken nor taught a virtual class. but one of the silver linings of the pandemic has been workshops and events shifting to take place virtually, when they couldn’t happen in person. i was reluctant at first; my classes are very hands-on and i like to give lots of personal attention to every student. i just couldn’t imagine how that could possibly happen through a computer? but last October i took the plunge when Stitches and the NY Sheep & Wool Festival (aka Rhinebeck) went virtual, and i decided i couldn’t miss out on these opportunities. since then, i’ve been teaching regularly and loving it!

i’ve mainly been posting about my classes over on Instagram, but i’m updating my teaching schedule for 2021 as events are confirmed (some in-person retreats are in the works too for this summer!) each month. most of the virtual events are now happening monthly and can barely keep up with the speedy pace!

on that note, in just two weeks i’m teaching 3 classes for the April edition of Stitches at Home, and i wanted to be sure you know about them! these are wonderful events with a huge line-up of amazing teachers in sewing, knitting, crochet, quilting, dyeing, embroidery… basically ALL the fiber arts! and there are even fashion shows, vendors, lectures and other fun perks you can experience without leaving home. i could go on and on about all the advantages of this new platform, and how accessible it is for so many more people. i feel certain that even once we are able to gather in person again, there will always be a virtual component to every live event.

so the three classes i’m teaching this time are:

Darn It All Crochet, in which you will learn how to mend holes in sweaters or socks by filling them in with a crochet patch worked right into the edge of the hole. i love this technique because you are creating a sturdy, flexible and even shaped (in the case of toes and heels) fabric to replace what has been lost.

Patch It! is my class about repairing holes in wovens and cut-and-sew knits (think t-shirts or leggings) with fabric patches. visible mending has become an art form and it feels good to keep your loved garments in use (and thus out of the waste stream) for as long as possible. if you’ve been inspired by all of the #MendMarch posts this month, here’s your chance to get in on the action!

Pattern Drafting for Knitters, Crocheters, Weavers + Sewists is my intro to drafting your own patterns. i’ll show you how to take your measurements properly and use them to draft a sloper (simple pattern) for your unique fit profile. think of it like a life-size schematic, which you can refer to whether you work from a written pattern or design your own!

registration is open, via the links above. i hope to see you in class!
