book review: design your own tees

i met Jen Cooke around 12 years ago, when i used to carry her hand-printed supremely colorful line of T-shirts, Raeburn Ink, in my shop in NYC. we’ve been friends ever since. i can still remember the very first group of tees she brought me; the prints were from the insides of security envelopes that she had been collecting. i had never really looked at those patterns before, and thought she was a genius for noticing and utilizing their beauty. i am so proud to share with you some photos from her brand new book, Design Your Own Tees, out now from St. Martin’s Press. it’s full of gorgeous projects (and what i think must be the most breathtaking Table of Contents page i’ve ever seen), and the step-by-step instructions on how to create them. i love that Jen gives you the option of using her artwork or designing your own, and there’s plenty of technical info to help you get the job done right. above are a few of my favorite projects. the techniques include applique, screen printing, block printing, stenciling, and lots more.

i could go on and on telling you about this book, but i am getting ready to leave for Squam on wednesday and have tons to do! i’ll be selling at the Squam Art Fair on saturday evening, and guess who will be at the table next to me? yes, Ms. Cooke herself. so if you’re anywhere near New Hampshire this weekend, come see us and check out the book and her riotous tees in person!
