the flock

some time shortly after this post in july, we had our first *incident* involving the loss of two chickens. i’ll spare you the details, but it was heartbreaking and we blamed ourselves. plus, we were barely over peggy. from our original six peeps, we were down to only three. for a few sad weeks, we watched our three skittish babies skipping around the yard, acting quite unsettled. we were unsettled too. so we started looking for a few more chickens to fill out the family. not an easy task, exactly. baby chicks are only available in spring. we worried that adult hens would bully our three-month old pullets. fortunately, we remembered that our farmer neighbors just down the road had gotten a whole slew of chicks just a few days before we did, so theirs were the same age. arrangements were made, and one saturday evening just after dark, we heard wheels in our driveway and a voice called out, “did somebody order CHICKEN?”

so three sleepy birds were slipped into the coop, where ours were already tucked in for the night. no one was the wiser ’til morning, but after a few days of scuffles the pecking order was established and all was right with the world. we have a flock.
