i try to get over to the West Coast at least once a year, but in a rare twist i will actually be coming TWICE in the span of about 3 months! first, in November, i’ll be teaching at Stitches SoCal in Pasadena for the 2nd time. i’m teaching 4 classes there, Make Your Own Leggings (you’ll draft your own custom pattern too!), Pattern Drafting for Knitters, Crocheters and Sewists, One-Day Skirt. and Boxy Tee/Drapy Tunic. i was supposed to be teaching Boxy Tee/Drapy Tunic but it’s been canceled due to low enrollment; not sure if it could be reinstated by popular demand but feel free to ask them if you’re interested! ETA: GREAT NEWS! Boxy Tee/Drapy Tunic has been reinstated at Stitches SoCal!!!
then, in February i’ll be in Santa Clara for my first time at Stitches West! i’ve heard so much about this one for years because many of my Bay Area friends are vendors and teachers and i’m super thrilled to be there this time. i’m teaching Boxy Tee/Drapy Tunic, Pattern Drafting, and One-Day Skirt, and you can find all the details and register here.
if you’ve never been to a Stitches event, they are H-U-G-E fiber arts gatherings, held in convention centers around the US. each one has about 40 teachers who are among the best in their fields, which include knitting, crochet, garment sewing, dyeing, weaving, quilting, embroidery, color theory, spinning and all kinds of sub-categories within those. i would start naming all of the fabulous teachers but really, i’d just end up naming them ALL so you may as well check out the lineup yourself right here.
and then there is the epic, wondrous, vendor marketplace! you just never know who you’ll stumble upon… in Atlanta i was thrilled to meet Sarah Watts (of Ruby Star Society) and see her lovely graphic goods she designs as Crafted Moon. and then i was thrilled to find that Toots Leblanc was there, whose lovely yarns i’d always hoped to encounter. and last year in Pasadena i ran into rad knit designer and friend Lee Meredith (below right) who was working at the Knit Picks booth. i’ve also found some new-to-me artisans like the lovely ladies of Oink Pigments, who made an impression by having some stellar crochet samples in their booth.
at SoCal this year i’m really excited to shop at the Superbuzzy booth and meet Kelly! and in Santa Clara i’ll be happy to see my pals A Verb for Keeping Warm who are longtime vendors at that one.
i’ve only taught at two Stitches events so far (SoCal last year and Stitches United in Atlanta in May) and they are an interesting new experience for me. i teach at a lot of retreats that take place in relatively remote areas, deep in the woods in some rustic cabins on a lake. my heart will always be in a rustic cabin, but i know that many prefer a more accessible venue and the comforts of civilization! if that sounds like you, gather some girlfriends and make an adventure of meeting up at one of these events. the sewing category (both garment and quilting) is a recent addition, so we are really trying to spread the word to a new audience. hope to see you at a Stitches!
