damn good community support

how’s this for inspiring community spirit? a local (to me) farm, Damn Good Honey Farm, who have the cutest farm stand i’ve ever seen, about a mile from my studio in Kerhonkson, NY, have put together a plan to deliver farm-fresh food and goods to doorsteps within a 20-mile radius. WOW! living in a place where you can’t even get a pizza delivered, an option like this a real luxury. and knowing that we’ll be helping support farmers who were just about to begin their market season right when life turned upside-down, is a bonus in the feel-good department!

from their Instagram post: “Homegrown Healthcare has never been more important! And the only thing better that #homegrownhealthcare is when it comes to you! Beginning next week we will be starting a free weekly delivery of food items we have access to through our neighboring farms, food producers, and local farm hub programs that we typically use to stock our market. Delivery will be limited to 20 miles of Kerhonkson. We will be able to provide most of the staples (eggs, butter, milk, beans, honey, maple syrup, grains, coffee, soap, of course soap, meats and bread) plus a large selection of fresh greens coming off the farms and storage crops like potatoes, onions, and winter squash. We will also offer the option for you to make a small donation for food to be purchased for seniors, families, and others who are struggling with access to fresh food. We are partnering with the @satisfyhungerhv campaign to distribute these donations.
We will offer front door delivery as well as the option to pick up your order from our front porch.”

i imagine the majority of you reading this don’t live in my immediate neighborhood, but i suspect similar plans are happening all over as small businesses and farms get creative in the face of this challenging time, especially since we are just at the start of the growing season in many regions. so check with your local farmers and see what’s happening in your neck of the woods!
