farmers’ market debut

i have always dreamed of having a booth at a real farmers’ market. i wouldn’t be selling traditional “PROduce”, but rather the things i make or “proDUCE”, using raw materials grown on my farm. well, on saturday that dream comes true! partially anyway (the fledgling farm is still gearing up for production). jill and i will have a booth representing Double Knot Studio, our roving school for fiber arts, at the opening day of the Kingston Farmers’ Market. we will be selling our homespun goods: jill’s heavenly handspun and hand-dyed yarn, and my home-sewn clothes and hats, and spreading the word about our classes. after this weekend, we will be there the first saturday of every month through november. we even have plans to actually teach some classes at the market! our booth will be around the corner in the Crafts on John section.

i’m beyond excited about this for many reasons. it’s the first market of the season! i’m not sure what will be ready yet, but i can’t wait to find out. i need VEGGIES! i hate buying them from grocery stores, where they’ve been picked too early and shipped in from who-knows-where. last year i barely made it to any of the local farm markets because they are all at least a half-hour drive away, and we have many farm stands nearby, which are convenient but not entirely the same. i have been in love with markets since i was in college and regularly visited Findlay Market in cincinnati on saturdays with my giant basket. then, on my first internships in nyc, i began shopping at the Union Square Greenmarket, which i consider the Queen Mother of all markets. many people still don’t realize that it’s there 4 days a week (mon/wed/fri/sat)! after moving to williamsburg, i frequented the McCarren Park Market in Greenpoint, and eventually joined a CSA there for my last three years in brooklyn.

also, we can’t wait to meet some new people who want to learn to knit/sew/crochet/embroider/play with fiber and fabric. we’ll be spinning, knitting, and making textile-y fun while we’re there, so if you are within range please come and visit! (and now, back to the sewing machine…)
