i have had something of an obsession with Meyer Lemon Trees for many years. i learned about them from, of course, Martha, who casually mentioned that they can be grown indoors and will actually produce lemons. huh. i am an avid houseplant grower, but very few will even bloom, and up until that bit of news i had never heard of any plant bearing fruit indoors. seed of obsession planted.
since then, my desire to own one grew and grew, but whenever i tried to find a specimen to call my own, they were upwards of $100. plus, i find that plants that were coddled and nurtured in a greenhouse their entire life often don’t survive the shock of shipping and moving into a dry, heated home. (i prefer to grow from seed or cuttings: free/cheap, no shock, and nothing to lose.) so let’s just say that when i saw the ad saying that my local greenhouse had all “citrus plants” on sale for 75% off, i felt the urge to go and see if they had any of these coveted plants. i had seen one there before, so i knew that they carried them…
WELL! imagine my glee when i found that they did indeed have some baby Meyers and due to the sale they were only FIVE DOLLARS. Jill happened to be there with me so i bought her one too! (in retrospect i regret not buying every one they had, but i was drunk with excitement and couldn’t think clearly…)
this was late summer, and my little precious one spent the remainder of our warm season out on my deck. i knew that it needed to experience some cooler night temps before coming in for the winter to **fingers crossed** bloom. i didn’t really believe it could happen, but one day, (was it January?) i noticed buds. then, slowly, came BLOOMS. and now, at least one spent flower has a slight green swelling where it once was. i can’t be certain, but i think i know what it is…
i’ll keep you posted.
