the tidbit that sealed the deal for me when i first heard about the trip to mexico was that we would be there for Day of the Dead. i think this is the most beautiful holiday i know of, and the spirit of it so sincere and sweet and amazing. and the craftiness! the care with which these handmade sugar sculptures are made is exquisite when you realize how fragile they are (most of the ones i tried to bring back didn’t survive the journey). the pan de muerte with (hot) chocolate was my favorite breakfast; you can only get that bread for the week leading up to the holiday and i took full advantage!
