toe-up crochet sock class and CAL

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

have you heard the news? i’ve got a new video class on Creativebug: Toe-Up Crocheted SOCKS! these are such a fun way to use your crochet skills and whip up some useful socks for you and all of your dear ones. there are so many ways you can make them and get this: i’ve designed them so that the heels and toes are fully replaceable, so if they wear out you can easily remove and stitch up new ones!

i thought it would fun to do a Toe-Up Crocheted Sock CAL (Crochet A-Long) and when i put the idea out on Instagram, it seemed like a bunch of people thought so too. i’ll make a pair (or two) along with you, cheer you on, and be able to address any questions or spots where you get stuck.

here’s the schedule:

now through thursday 1/12: gather your materials! this is a recipe-style pattern, so you can make your socks in any size yarn. you can use worsted-weight yarn for more of a slipper or boot sock, or fingering for a thinner (but still a bit thicker than knit socks) pair. and subscribe to Creativebug so you have access to the class.

thursday 1/12: this will be the official kick-off to our CAL! you are welcome to begin sooner, or participate even if you have already begun. this is a very loose sock-a-long, mainly about camaraderie and support! we’ll get started on the foot of the sock.

thursday 1/19: we’ll split for the heel and continue onto the ankle.

thursday 1/26: we’ll work the heel of the sock

thursday 2/2: we’ll work the toe of the sock

thursday 2/19: cuff rib and wrap up!

a bit more about gathering supplies: all you need to crochet a pair of socks is some yarn, a hook, and your feet. we’ll be working to measurements so you’ll want to use your own feet or some that you can measure. the yarn can be any size (probably not anything bigger than worsted, unless you want some super chunky slipper socks), but you’ll want something with multiple plies (it’ll hold up better) and ideally a high twist. a yarn that’s actually made for socks would be great, but i suggest starting with something you already have on hand (you can even use leftover bits and make some wild stripy socks) for your first pair, to get the process down. and you’ll need a corresponding hook, smaller than you might typically use for the weight of yarn. i usually use a G or H (4.25 or 5mm) hook for worsted weight yarn, but for socks i found an E (3.5mm) hook to be just right. you’ll need to make a swatch of half double crochet and analyze it for a good sock gauge. i talk about this, and how to determine the right hook size, in the class video.

let me know if you have any questions in the comments below!
