slow fashion 1.0 retreat

retreat season is coming up quickly, and i thought i should share some of the incredible retreats i am so honored to be teaching at this year! i believe this is the 5th year of the Slow Fashion Retreats created by Samantha Lindgren of A Gathering of Stitches, and now that (as of 2021) it has found its way to one of my favorite venues, Medomak in Washington, Maine, i don’t think it could really be improved…

there will actually be two different versions of the Slow Fashion Retreat this year (and one quilting retreat). i am teaching at the first one, Slow Fashion 1.0, along with the ever-delightful mender and sashiko artist Jessica Marquez, and master historical hand-stitcher Sarah Woodyard, who i am so excited to meet!

this year i’ll be teaching my newest class, Hack It, in which you’ll learn how to add elements and/or modify an existing pattern to transform it into infinite variations. you know, like collars, cuffs, plackets, hoods, seams, facings, pockets, yokes, pleats, gathers, tucks, keyholes… all those little details that give a piece its style. it’s sure to be fun and i can’t wait to see what everyone makes!

the group of attendees gets divided into thirds, and each third spends a full day with each teacher. plus there are two free days to continue working on projects, as well as pursue extracurricular activities like kayaking, exploring nearby towns (and fabric stores), listening to baby owls, napping on docks, foraging for ice cream cones, drinking wine around a campfire…

all of the garments you see here were made at camp last year. i love seeing those satisfied smiles!

there is truly nothing like the joy and pride of wearing clothes you made yourself. this retreat celebrates the handmade wardrobe and adds new skills to your repertoire, in between swimming in a spectacular lake, stitching in rocking chairs on the porch, eating yummy healthy meals you don’t have to cook yourself, watching shooting stars, hunting for wild blueberries, and debating what’s the best kind of thread.

you can find out all the juicy details about Sam’s 3 dreamy retreats over at the A Gathering of Stitches website. there are only a handful of spots left, so act fast if you’d like to join us. we’d love to have you!
