2022 make your own wardrobe workshop

i know that many of you have been patiently waiting for me to announce my year-long virtual Make Your Own Wardrobe class for 2022! sorry for the delay, but here are the details you’ve been waiting for:

Make Your Own Wardrobe is an extended, virtual version of my 5-day live intensive classes in which we draft patterns, sew and fit muslins, correct the pattern, and then sew a *real* version of 6 garments: Skirt, T-Shirt, Shift Dress, Boxy Top, Leggings and Lounge Pants. i’ve always thought it would be nice to teach this in a less intense, more s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d out format, with more time in between to process the info and keep playing with what you learn, in smaller increments. each 4-month section of class will cover 3 garments and then a session of pattern manipulations and restyling. by the end of the full class, you will have at least 6 garments, or quite possibly more!

having taught this class for two years, i have learned a few things. one is that the main focus of this class will really be on the pattern drafting. the sewing is all very simple, and i will explain and show samples of how to sew the garments and the suggested techniques, but you will need to be largely self-motivated and disciplined to finish your garments between classes. i would say this class is a good fit for intermediate-to-advanced sewists who are looking to explore pattern drafting.

the program will begin at the end of March and run through November, but this year i am dividing it into two separate sections of 4 months each, to give some flexibility. you won’t necessarily have to take the first half in order to take the second half, but priority will be given to students from the first half. we’ll have one all-day class per month, hosted over Zoom as two 2-hour sessions. it will generally be the last Saturday of the month, though there are a few months where i have a conflict, or holidays interfere, and the schedule will shift a bit. classes will run from 12pm-2pm EST, then a 2-hour break (during which you can work on your pattern and maybe cut/sew your muslin), then 4-6pm EST. there will also be an optional short Tuesday evening check-in between each session, for sewing help or questions, from 6-7:30pm EST. i do my best to record each class so if you need to miss one, you can watch the recording for a limited time after. you will also be invited to join a Slack group for chatting, sharing pics and resources, questions and more in between classes.

minimum skill level required is what i call “Advanced Beginner”, meaning you know basic sewing and have made a few simple projects. previous garment-sewing or pattern-drafting experience are not needed, but if garment sewing is very new to you, expect that you will have some extra work and learning to do on your own time. if you do have some garment skills and/or more sewing experience, that’s fine too and you can take on more challenging projects! the focus for this class will really be on the pattern-drafting. i will demonstrate the sewing techniques as needed, but the sewing will be generally fairly simple. most of the sewing will happen outside of class sessions.

the price for each month of class will be $80, so for each section the class will be $320. the first payment of $320 is due by 3/21 to reserve your spot in class.

there is a minimum number of students needed to run the class, and i’m thinking a max of 20 students. spots will be first-come (i.e. paid!), first-served. i prefer payment by check in the mail (so old fashioned, i know! but it eliminates fees) but we can discuss other methods if needed.
hopefully i’ve covered all the basic info? email me (cal at calpatch dot com) to reserve your spot, or if you have questions!
